Janet Soares

Janet Mansfield Soares, of Woolly Ruggers, has been hooking rugs as a pastime for many years. A professor emerita at Barnard College, Columbia University, she has also served on the faculty of the Juilliard School during her long career as a professional dancer and choreographer. With a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies from Columbia, she is the author of Louis Horst. Musician in a Dancer’s World (Duke, 1992), Martha Hill and the Making of American Dance (Wesleyan, 2009), and The Westminster Arcade (History Press, 2021). Her rug designs on linen are often inspired by works of art that she translates into rug designs, hooking loop by loop, using strips of wool that are usually hand-dyed.
