Lilyworks Tile
Paul Halferty received his BFA in the Ceramic Arts from Tyler School of Art in 1999. Upon graduating, Paul went to work for Peace Valley Tile where he would learn the art and craft of handmade tile. In the summer of 2002 Paul began work at Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, a historic pottery studio located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Handmade tiles are still produced at the Tile Works in a manner similar to that developed by the studio's founder and builder, Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930). Paul would spend the next ten years honing his craft as Ceramist and Master Mold-Maker.
Esther developed a love of texture and pattern during her time at Hartford Art School. She gained the valuable perspective that art is meant to be seen, experienced, and enjoyed while working as Assistant Collections Manager at the New Britain Museum of American Art. But Esther's greatest inspiration has come through travel. "I've always been drawn to the layering of architecture, history, culture, and pattern you encounter when travelling abroad." While still at Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, Paul and Esther began to lay the groundwork for what would become Lilywork Artisan Tile. Lilywork Artisan Tile is a small hand-crafted tile line based in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Inspired by their travels abroad, owners and makers Paul and Esther Halferty have designed a tile line that evokes culture, history, time, and place. As a business, Lilywork is committed to using old world methods and techniques, creating all of their own molds, glazes, and tile by hand, thus continuing the craftsman tradition. They are committed to working in an environmentally responsible way as their business grows. |
